Records of settlements in the area date back to the early medieval times. A later settlement was founded on the remains of the medieval colonisation, in the fertile heart of the Zitny [Rye] Island, which became township in late Middle Ages. Dunajska Streda as it is known today was founded in the 19th century though the merger of Dunajska Streda “Szerdahely” in Hungarian) and several neighbouring villages. The city is located on the route connecting the cities of the Danube Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest, and is therefore the ideal place for anyone planning trips in the footsteps of the history and cultural development in the heart of Europe. The spas of Dunajska Streda make use of the geothermal springs, used for curing aches of the back, joints as well as muscles. The Danube lowlands are a heaven for anyone keen on cycling or trekking. One of the destinations that offer themselves is the reservoir Gabcikovo, located just outside the city.
